"ESSENTIAL INDUSTRIES."
AND THE MILITARY BALLOT. Christehurcli, Jan. S. A reporter to-day called the Hon. James Allen's attention to the remarks made by him at Motueka last Wednesday 011 the subject of exemption, and asked for further information on the subject. Mr. Allen replied that for some timo the Government has had under consideration the questions of essential industries and .of industrial efficiency as affecting the whole of the Dominion, but it was not intended to interfere in any way with the powers of the Military Service Boards in the matter of exemption. "If the Board finds cases of undue hardship," he said, "the Government will endeavoi to remove them. At the same time the Government wants to conserve the essential industries of the Dominion, and it will have to make arrangements to do so. 1£ it would be an undue hardship to take men for military service, the undue hardship would have to bo removed by filiation or bv Act."
