THE EMPIRE.

MARGUERITE CLARK IN "MICE AND MEN." -I'iie outstanding attraction of the new VI! presented to a full house at the Empire last night was the I'lmous Players Company's admirable phoic-plav ver:tcn of the romantic drama "Mice and Men.'' The story is daintily expressed in the picture. and the pieces lavishly singed. A 1 ;ii^ut-rir g Clark, the popular Cinema idol, plays the leading part with iresistibh* charm. The tlieiue is a cap-t-vating one; it deals ivii*i the experience of a philosopher who wanted a 'pnifect" woman for his wife It occurred to liim that the rtilv way to secure a wife who approached his ideal was to bring one up from childhood airiest. With that object in view he adopted a beautiful girl from a foundling home and orphanage, and set about to t'.ain her as he would have her be'when grown up. But the best-laid plans will sometimes go astray, and so it was with the philosopher's plans The girl falls in love with her benefactor's nephew, a handsome young military i-lficer, and •trough she discovers that the officer has lliitcu with another the girl saves him from scandal and fo..<fveß him. The philosopher realises that his adopted foundling loves another, and he accepts the inevitable with a good grace, thus bringing about a happy ending! The scenes are laid in America about the year 1847. The supporting Sims comprise "Patlie Gazette," which is brimful of interesting illustrated news, and '"lhe Battler," a most hilarious pugilistic farce-coniedv, with Hughie Mack in thi leading role. The same programme v/:!l he repeated again to-night, and tomorrow night.
