The national shortage for the 2fith reinforcements, voluntary recruiting 'or which closed down on Saturday, is 1-21-2. Two districts—Noison and the Hay of Plenty—escape the ballot, Itavill:.' raised their quotas voluntarily. The ballot to make up the shortages in other districts is now proceeding. THE SEDITION APPEALS. Wellington, Jan. S. Mr. G. Hutchison, who. is appearing for Somple, Cooke, Eraser, Urindle, and Thorn, in the sedition appeals, lias adrised Mr. MeCombs, M.P., that lie intends lo raise the question as to the competency of Parliament to pass the Conscription Act. Th" appeals will probably be taken together on a special (late, prior to the ordinary criminal sessions.
