ENGLAND'S DETRACTOR.
W. E. HEARST SQWHMS(Auckland Star's Special Correspondent) San Francisco, Nov. 2S. The arch-detractor of Jkitain and all her colonics, William Randolph Hearst who owns a syndicate of American newspapers of tile yellow typo of journalism. is still squirming over England's action of cutting off his war news supply from the official Press bureau in London Poor old Hearst, who claims, to !• the greatest newspaper publisher in tli. United States, is at his wit-' end to fil' his columns, and the result is that mon than ever the matter he daily dishes up t.o his lessening readers is of, the tainted style, and comes over the Berlin wireless route to Sayville Island near New York. Hearst lias taken to villifying Great Britain, charging that she keeps her home country military in the background. and sends the troops from New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa continually into the fray "'where they are uselessly butchered up by the Germans."
All these fiery assertions by this firebrand of journalism have had no avail except to bring further, ridicule upon the head of this luckles<j detractor of thoritie; have made it af pena* offence for anyone to be found in possession of any of Heart's newspapers in Canada under a fine of 5000 dollars., and a possible term of imprisonment. Heart's cup of woe lias been further added to ( by the Canadian Government prohibiting' all sisue? of the Hearst's Magazine, which recently contained a series of articles reflecting on Great Britain as depicted in stories of the Irish rebellion last Easter in Dublin. For years Hearst lias ridiculed the British Kmpire, but nov> lie has discovered that John Bull really has more power than lie anticipated. The Hearst papers have lost greatly in circulation, it is said, through the cutting ofT of war news of a reliable nature. Americans are sick of the tiintrd German stuff.
