Air. W. H. Collingwood, town cleric of Palmerston North, is visiting New Plymouth. Mr. A. J. Morton, chief inspector in the Taranaki education district is Still confined to a private hospital teriously ill. Mr. H. McMurrav, gaoler of the Ne\V Plymouth prison, has received notice of his transfer to Napier. Mr. T. Vincent, of Wellington, will succeed Ml'. McMurray.

At a farewell social in the Opunake Town Hall on Wednesday, Privates Leslie Raynor, ,T. Maefie ami L. .T. King and Troopers Albert Aitken, Andrew Aitken, and Warwick Claris, Gunner E. Wallis, and Machincgunner V. Warner were presented with safety raaors, wristlet watches, and 'housewives. Private Maefie and Trooper Claris also reerived, from the 'Presbyterian com* munity, silver-mounted pocket-books.

The mortal remains of the late Mr. J. Elliott, who died at the New Plymouth Hospital on Tuesday, after a short illness, were laid to vest 111 the To Henui Cemetery yesterday afternoon. During his lifetime. Mr. Elliott had identified himself with- numerous social interests that had for their object the promotion of -the welfare of the community. He was ever ready to assist those in distress, and it. is known to his intimate friends +hn> he did a great deal in re? lio' ing ■'he sufferings of those in need. Hi<\ enthusiastic purpose, his disinterestedness, his warm, genial disposition, and his sterling qualities won for hint a high place in the estimation of a large number of friends. Messages of condolence regarding his death were received from all over New Zealand, and over 400 ipooplc visited the residence in which his remains lay to pay their last respects to him. The funeral left the residence of Mrs. Hammond, Devon Street, where Mr. Elliott had resided for 20 years. Numerous floral tributes cotered the casket, and the cortege was unusually long. Representatives of the local Order of Rechabites, Star Football Club, East End Reserve'Comniittee, Lifesaving Club, Patriotic Committee, and a number of returned soldiers were among those present.
