'■ 42> . A MONTH OF FINE WEATHER. Fine weather was experienced in New Plymouth during December, and tih<\ maximum and minimum temperature* were very even. The rainfall was tin lightest experienced for December foi thirteen years. The maximum and minimum mean respectively.were 75 deg. and 53.7 dog, Fresh south-eastej-ly winds were experiencedoa the 2lith, 27th, and 28th, otherwise the month, was comparatively calm, with a. continuanec of sultry day* and night*. Magnificent sunsets were noted on the 4th, 11th, 2.3rd, 24th, and 28th. A sharp earthquake was recorded at 12.0tl a.m. ou the 23rJ. Thunder, moving from the north-east, occurred on the Oth. Rain fell ou eight days—fl.43in. on the 7th, Mb, on the 15th; total, l.nioin. The following observations, taken bv .Mr. W. W, Smith, at the Pukekura Park Observatory, were recorded: — Maximum temperature, 79deg. oil 23rd and 24th; minimum temperature, C3deg. on 21st, 'JOdcg. on Ist; maximum wet bulb, 88deg. on 23rd, (iOdeg . ou Ist; minimum wet bulb, ilOdeg. on 25tih, 44 deg. on Ist; terrestrial thermometer (3 inches from grass), 51dcg. on 23rd, 42dtg. on Ist; solar radiator, IGodeg. on 18th, UOJeg. on 20th. Cloudiness ranged from i on four days to 10 on three (sunle**) days. Sunshine recorder, 13hr. 32 imtt. on 11th, 3min. on 17th, total 25(1 hr. sSmin.; wind direction, N.E. foui davD, N.W. three days, S.E. five' days S. ; two days, W. two days, S.W. fourtoci days, one calm day.
