The Maitai, aground at. Rarotonga, was formerly known as the Miowera, and was engaged for some years in the Sydney-Vancouver service before she became the property of her present owners, the Union Company. Originally owned by Mi. James Hiiddart, the Maitai was built in 1802 by C. S. Swan and Hunter, Newcastle, and was engined by the Wallsend Slipway Company, Ltd.. Newcastle. She is a stcd-iicrew, threemasted vessel, of 3303 tons gross and 188S tons net. The vessel is equipped with refrigerating machinery. The principal dimensions are:—Length 345 ft, beam 42ft 2in, depth 2oft 1 in. Captain Charles McLean, who is in command, is making his first trip as master in the San Francisco service. Rarotonga Is about six days' voyage from Wellington, while the passage between Papeete and Rarotonga occupies about two days.
