The pronouncements put side by side are. the very best index of the present fortunes of the war The British interview is a trumpet blast: the German interview? are abject whines 'We know the Germans sufficiently by this time to understand,'that when they are winning, their mood is not modest; it is indeed their irrogancft that, has been their undoing. When they whine, then, it is not, be sure, tliey have had a real change of their inner heart. Savage militarists these German lowers began; savage they remain: the only difference is. that at last they have realised they are beaten; and l : ke so many a convicted and cruel criminal, ihey throw themselves with a hypocritical snufile 011 the mercv of the Court.
