CHARGE AGAINST AN OFFICER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, December 20. An officer well known in Auckland military circles. Captain Robert Candlisli Hocking, was arrested to-day and brought before Mr. Krazer, S.M., at the Police Court, where he. was charged—"That on or about September 20, lflly, being Adjutant of the 3rd Auckland Regiment, 'having received £5 on terms requiring him to account for same to the Auditor-General, lie failed to do so." On the application of the chief detective a remand for eight days was granted. Bail was fixed at one surety in £IOO or two of £SO. Mr. Denniston, for accused, stated that there was a perfect answer to'the charge. NEW ZEALAND RIFLE BRIGADE. Auckland, December 20. The Hon. .fames Allen lias received the * following telegram from the Govtrior:—"As Honorary Colonel of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade,'his Excellency the Governor 'lias received a telegiam notifying him of the fact that, with the approval of his Majesty, FieldMarshal His. Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn has been graciously pleased to assume the appointment of Colonel-in-Chief of the New Zealand lliilc Brigade." His Excellency, has despatched the following telegram to his Royal Highness: —"On behalf of all ranks of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, I desire to tender to your Royal Highness our respectful congr itulations on your assumption of the appointment of Colonel-in-Chief of the .-egiment, and at the same time to assure you of our high appreoulioi of the honor which you have conferred on us." -. ~ The Minister stated that his Excellency had also advised him that he had tent a telegram to the Brigadier-Gen-eral commanding the regiment in the field conveying to him the text oi the above telegrams. "I am sure it will be very gratifying to New Zealand," added Mr. Allen, "that his Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught has graciously assumed the appointment of Colonel-in-Chief of the Rifle Brigade. I have no doubt it will stimulate the Brigade to add honors to those they have won already."
