Mr. I. H. Quilliam left for AucttianS by the steamer last night. Miss Barnes, who has completed he* course as probationer at the West Knd -School, was presented with a v.lume ol Tennyson's poer*^. The death occurred yesterday in New Plymouth of Mr. John O'Donnell, at tlu ripe age of S7 years. He had seen military service in the Crimea, where he gained the prize for the best- shot in the British Army before Sebastopol, in# Tudifi during the Mutiny, and in the Taranaki Maori wars.

The Rev. J. R. Phore, who was killed while motoring near Hamilton on Sunday, while on his way to a service, was for many years Presbyterian minister at Hawcra, where his ministrations were very successful. He was one of the candidates selected for tho charge of St. Andrew's in Christchurch. Mr.- Shore was for some time in the Otago district being associated with the Oamaru Presbytery. He was a scholarly man, and his decease is deeply regretted by his brethren in /he Church and by all who had been /associated with him in his religious and public activities. (hi Saturday. November. 4th, Lieuten-ant-Colonel A. B. Charters was received at Buckingham Palace, and had conferred upon him the Most Distinguished Order of CM.fi. Lieutenant-Colonel Charters is a son of Mr. W. \\. Charters, of Christchnrch. He was twice mentioned in despatches—once by General lan Hamilton and once by General Ma:.\vcll. The high honour which has just been conferred upon him wns in recognition of his excellent work as Base Commandant in Egypt. At present Lieutenant-Colonel Charters commands the Ist Otago Battalion.
