At yesterday's meeting of tie Tmv naki Education oßard, Mr. Hector 0. '"hn=nn was appointed one of the Board's agricultural instructors. Lieutenant-Colonels P. A. Lindsay and E. Jennings, members of the Wellington Military -Medical Board, are engaged at Hawcra, examining coinn'jlsoriTy-enlist-ed recruits. The .Education Board, at it* meeting yesterday, passed 'a resolution of sympathy with Mr. C A. W'lliinson,' >1.1'., a member of Mie Bqaid, in the loss l.e had sustained through the .death of hi* father. Recent casualty list, and Hospital progress reports contain the following !ian:i«:—-Previously reported missing * now reported killed in action: LanceCorporal <i. W. Ward (C,. H. Major-General Monash is the Melbourne engineer, who left with one of the first battaiif.ns, and did great work in Egypt and Gall'* poli.
Mrs. Charles Dyke, oi WhaKamar*, has received word through the Defence Department that her brother, Rifleman A. Horn, who was previously reported missing in the liig fight of September SO, has now been declared by the Court of Inquiry as killed in action on that dote. Tile family have also received „ telegram from Mr. flavin Hamilton, private secretary to the Governor, enclosing a message of sympathy received from the King and Queen. There will be wide regret at the death of "Alf." Horn, as lie was a lad of fine qualities, and the most conscientious of workmen. It is some satisfaction to his relatives to know that be did not die in vain, as r. comrade, in a letter to a local friend, mentions the fact that in the great September "push" "Alf." Horn shot eight Germans at the entrance to a. dugout. This wa;. a lew days before he \v«» reported missing.
Owing to pressure of his own privSW aft'airs, Mr. J. Brown tendered his resignation as a member of the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board at the meeting yesterday. Membur 1 of the Board spoke in very appreciative termi of the valued services rendered by Mr. Brown during the sixteen years be bad been a member of the Board, and o.ua ami all asked that he reconsider his dacision. Mr. Brown explained the necessity for him to devote more time to th# management of his farm. Ilfi had lort one son, another was at the front, snd there was only the one boy on the far® now, who could not manage everything himself. He found it impossible _ to obtain assistance, hence, as he had intimated, it was necessary for him to sperd more of his own time on the farm, anil ■he felt he could not devote the necessary attention to the affairs of th» Board. In response to the unnnimoiw wish of the Board, Mr. Brown ultimately agreed to hold over his resignation until November next.
