A MAORI WAR INCIDENT.
To the Editor, Sir.- -With reference to the paragraph referring U myself appearing; in the obituary report on the death of the late Daniel Hughes', published in a-recent issue. T desire to point out several inaccuracies. The statement that the friendly Natives cam? across three Maori babes and promptly killed two, is not only rpi.'te incorrect, but also reflect; upon the Natives concerned. The incident is weii known to me, and, in fact, within my r.wn recollection. In the first place, the '•Ubcs" referred to were, children of between eight and ton years of a sc. Ciaing the Tp Ngntu-o-te-Manu fight. I with an older child, had wandered sonic little distance from the camp, when a friendly Native, named Pirimona. came upon us.- The oidei child ran away, hut I'irimona took me to a camp near the pali, where a number of friendly Natives and European soldiers had assembled, and .-where I saw two other children, both of whom were known to me. One of those was a cripple, and this child was then killed, but there was no suggestion that I and the other child should also be killed. Both of us are still living. I am quite certain this is the incident referred to, and it is therefore obviously incorrect for the late Mr. Hughes or any other European to have claimed to have saved ine from being killed under the circumstances referred to.—l am, etc., WM. FOX. Waitara, Dec. 18. ,
