' • A'-. Christehureh, Dec. 18, In the Magistrate's Court, before Ml. 1 H. W. Bishop, Fred. Riley Cooke, °li; prominent local Socialist, was charged with having, on December 10, expressed 1 1 seditious intention contrary to tha ' War Regulations. Tile charge aroM ■ over a speech in the Socialist Hall, in' which Cooke denounced the Conscript tion Act. us *" Cooke pleaded not guilty. ~(i A portion of the speech was mi - criticising this Act. In reply to th% Magistrate, Cooke said he must coal timie to protest against the Act. * -Mr. Bishop: Co you tell me that, whatever results from this case, you ' intend to insist on your right to crit4<t cise the Act? ' 'j Accused: I certainly must.

CHARGE OF CONSPIRACY. Wellington, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court, three men, Timothy Troy, Joseph William Scott, and Maurice Costello, were committed for trial on a charge of conspiring to defraud Alfred Crossiey, a veteri« nary surgeon, of £52, in connection with a game of show poker at PahiatlUj after the recent race meeting.
