A .FALSE DECLARATION. By Tejegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, Dee. 18. The first prosecution for a false declaration under the Military Service Act was heard to-day, when a young man who was cohabiting with a woman declared himself in the national registration return to be a married man with one child. Defendant pleaded guilty and said the object of the false declaration was to protect the woman with whom he was livijig. He had no desire to shirk, and was in any case ineligible owing to blindness in one eye. The Magistrate said the Legislature regarded the oll'enee as a very serious one, and had lie thought defendant committed the act to avoid liability for service he would have sent him to gaol without the option of a fine. He felt inclined, however, to believe the story-and fined him £5 and costs. ANOTHER CHARGE OF SEDITION. Christchureh, Dee. IS. Fred R. Cooke, a prominent Socialist, has been arrested for making a seditions utterance in Christchureh on December 10, in contravention of the war regulations.
