BAND CONCERTS.

COU'XCIL GRANTS 'PERMISSION Discussion took place at the meetin K of the Works Committee of the Borougl| Council last evening on the question whether permission should be granted the Citizens' Committee, to. take up a collection in connection with concerts to be held on Thursday evening and on Sunday afternoon. Wilson asked the chair man of the Band Committee what ar rangements bad been made for the Christmas municipal concerts that had been promised. Cr. A. H. Johnstone (chairman of thf Band' Committee) replied .that-no arrangements had been made. He had asked the secretary on several occasions what had been done, and had been * informed that the matter had been deferred. The secretary had said the band preferred to get into going order first, and to see what its present engagements were likely to be, Cr. L. M. Monteath said the band had done good work, and should be ent couraged. Cr. W. A. C'ollis had no objection to a collection being taken on Thursday, , but he was opposed to the Sunday collection. People wbo were entitled to use the park should not be made to feel they were obliged to make a payment before they entered. Cr. Wilson: J have no objection to B Sunday collection, but I take strong exception to a collection on Christmas Eve, when there would be a large-nunn ber of visitors in the park. Cr. Wilson moved an amendment —"That permission be granted only for Thursday evening." Or. Collis seconded. , . Crs. tfolinstone and Griffiths were <in favor of granting permission on both' occasions. Cr. Johnstone mentioned that .a gratifying feature of the band's proposals' was that they would do away with the objectionable practice of sol lotting : money at Christmas. The amendment was lost, and the motion that permission be granted for. . both occasions was carried,
