GEXERAL ITEMS. Stratford. Dei. Hi. A reminder should hardly bo necessary of the lecture to be delivered in the Town Hall 011 Monday, by Mr. .1. T. T. Hornsbv, M.P. The subject is, ''The War —and After." The lecture will be vi.der the auspices of the Stratford Patriotic Society. Admission is free, bui a collection will be taken up in aid of the funds of the Society. The Stratford Beautifying Soriety is responsible for the great improvement made in the roadway leading from the railway station to tiie post office The borough authorities were given credit for this work. The society has to thank Messrs Morison, Reader, and P. R. Stewart jipr donations of plants, etc. Writing to the A. and P. Association, Mr. A. .1. Oallichan. an exhibitor, expressed the appreciation of Exhibitors f:om his district (Manawatu). He included the railway officials here. Tho stationmaster saw that they had clean trucks for the cattle on the return journey, a privilege not always granted. His experience was that the Stratford show
v.as. one of the best conducted at which he had exhibited stock. The Stratford Committee has forwarded £2lOl towards the Belgian Fund. Hie total is now £2104, the latest contributors being ft. X. Curtis £lO, Sanderson family £1 Is. The entertainment given liy the Convent pupils in His Majesty's theatre on Fiidav night proved a most enjoyable success. The theatre was crowded to the tool's and the public thoroughly enjoyed tiie lengthy but varied programme submitted. Mr. J. R. L. Stanford, solicitor and "sport," has heard the call. He beard it before, but failed to pass the test. His luck was better 011 the last occasion, and he moves into camp in March. Kis partrer, Mr. R. Spence, has received a coinmission as lieutenant, and leaves next month for tfye front. Five othe> members of the firm of Spence, Stanford, and Spence have gone into the military camps. The assistants at the Stratford Central Co-operative Stores are to icceive a It! per cent, war bonus 011 wages. A brief but pleasing ceremony was transacted in Court on Friday. • Mi. T. C'. Fookes. on behalf of the liar, expressed the good wishes of the season to Mr. W. R. Haselden. S.M. The latter thanked members for their good fellowship. He had had twelve months' duty in sitting at Stratford sessions, and hoped to be able to continue so next year. The Stratford Jersey Breeders' Association were to have met to-day. The meeting was adjourned till January, by v.hieh time it hoped fanners will have r.iore leisure to attend. flood soaking rain fell in Stratford last, night and to-day. The Germans are looking for peace. A fine sentiment for December. Stratford folk are looking for presents, and tliey can have a big selection to choose from if they visit C. K. James' warehouse.
