PARIHAKA ROAD BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of . the PariJ'.alea Hoiul Hoard was held at Rahotu on ihursday, when there were present: Or*. .T. Young (chairman), T. Harvey, ■S. Willoughby, and M. O'Brien. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer fMr. Harris) reported that tho recent exceptionally heavy rains had caused floods, which did more or less damage to the roads and culverts in the district. The Ohaia lioad suffered a good deal. The metal has been washed off in several places. Two men and a horse and dray had been sent up to repair the damage. The ditches along the road should be cleaned out, other" wise every heavy rain would do similar damage. He had inspected the Upper Ohaia Road, anil found that there were not any wires now across the road. The posts were still there, but were not obstructing. The J\iua Road had been finished for the present. The sides in tho worst places had been ploughed and, scooped off; a 2ft. pipe culvert had been jut in, and a large wooden culvert near the top end. A start had been made with forming the top end of the Witeora Road, which would be metalled with pit gravel. On the Rahotu Road, Mr. Green's pit had been fenced, and some work had been done to the ford. Kegarding tho footbridge, which lie had been directed to build at a cost not exceeding £lO, he found it was quite impossible to put up anything useful for that money, and he attached a sketch of a light foot-passenger bridge that could be built for £2O. A 12-inch pipe culvert had been put in on the Kahui Road. Mr. John Fleming had found the grazing for two horses free while working ou the Kiua Road.
Mr. M. Hill, foreman Warea, reported that he had repaired the wash-outs and culverts on Warea Road, -which tool; ■nboirt M yards of shingle. A bridge on the N'ewall Road had been repaired. A new bridge was badly needed. Mr. Revell's pit on the Warea Road had been fenced. Some formation had been done 011 the Paora Road, and lie had also been 'breaking stone on Stent, Bailey, and Pungarelm Roads. On the motion of Messrs. Willoughby and O'Brien, it was resolved to erect the suspension bridge at a tost of £2O, pro-, viding that Mr. Green subscribes £0 towards its cost. Mr. Tlarvey objected, as • he did not consider the expense warranted. Only one family was affected, and he did not think the children would be debarred from school one day in two years owing to the flood waters. It was resolved to thank Mr. J. Fleming for giving free grazing to the Board's horses. The usual holidays at Christmas and New Year were granted to the permanent hands. The oflice will be closed from Christmas Eve until January 3. The overseer was authorised to in-
speet tlie bridge mentioned, and, it lie considers it dangerous, to place warning notices thereat. RUAKERE ROAD. Mr. T. Oeary waited on the Board, and asked that gates across the Ruakere Rond be removed. He stated that he 'understood the road was .€IOO in credit, and he asked that some of it should he expended on the road to allow him access to his section. The Board decided to have the gates removed, and the foreman was instructed to give the respective, settlors notice. He was also instructed to report on the state of the road at next meeting. UPPER PARIHAKA ROAD. The overseer reported that he -had visited the Upper Parihaka Road, and found that two culverts were needed to keep the track open for traffic, one of I'2-inch am], the other of 3ft. pipes. Mr. Lysaght's manage: had promised to haul the pipes in from the Kaluii Road, and after the holidays would probably be able to place some men to do the work. A lot of roots and stumps and logs required removing. The overseer was empowered to have tlie work 011 the Pariha'ka Road carried cut to the value of £5, when labor was procurable. Members expressed the rpinion that the Board's staff were too busy at present to undertake tlie work. The District Manager of the Public Trust Office, replying to an application from the Board for a grant towards work on the t'pper Parihaka Road, advised that the lessees were aware of the absence of a track when they took up their sections. Moreover, the block had been partitioned, and the iPiiblie Trustee had yio funds to expend in contributing towards works such as this. Mr. llnrvey considered that the settlers should go in for a loan. GENERAL. Some discussion took place as to the financial position of the various roads in the district. The matter was "eld over until next meeting, when the Clerk will submit a statement showing the financial position of each road as shown by the road accounts book, with a view to readjusting the accounts. The. Minister of Public Work's notified that the application for a grant for the formation and metalling of Cape Road would receive consideration next year. In reference to a complaint re. a partly-buried bullock on iNewall Road, Constable 1). J. O'Neill reported that lie had examined the road, and :ould see no signs of a public nuisance. The overseer was instructed to employ labor for carting metal on the Ngariki Road. It was decided to ask the ranger to give a report of his work each month.
