E. Henrys should declare his weights to-day for the first day of the Stratford Racing Club's annual meeting. As most of the horses racing at New .Plymouth are also entered at Stratford, a comparison of the work of the two handicappers should afford considerable discussion. ; It was rumored last week that the task of weighting the horses for the second day at Stratford had been delegated to' Mr; J. E. Henrys' son, "Jack," and it will be interesting to see how the youngster fills his pater's shoes at New Year. For a beginning, the job is a tough c%e. To begin with, weights for the first day are declared before the Taranaki Jockey Club's Christmas meeting, and the usual ridiculous fixed penalties (or possible rehandicaps) upset the elder Henrys' adjustments for the first day. The second day's weights then present a series of teasing conundrums, the handicapper having to keep three days' results in view, and possibly Maiiawatu running as well. Still, good luek to young "jack!" Horse-owners should not overlook the fact that acceptances for the first day's events at the Taranaki Christmas meeting close on Friday, December 15, at 9 p.m. The weights a.ppear to have been framed with Mr. George Morse's usual care, ajid good acceptances are expected. Depredation has been paid up for in the Te Awanuitu Cup, to be run over a mile and a quarter, on Saturday next. The Taranaki horse has 8.7, and Lady Penury heads the list with ft.O. A win in this race entails no penalty for the Auckland Cup. Cup candidates are now gathering 'at Ellerslie, and the arrival of * the Southerners has created* a deal of interest. John Barleycorn is 'reported to be looking very fit, and Marc An: tony and Ardenvohr have also gained friends. Depredation has been galloping very pleasingly, and Chortle and Blackall are likely to ''harden" in the market when they reach headquarters. Of the locally-owned division, Colonel Soult bears as well-trained an appearance as any. Mullingar has ftiken to bleeding after each gallop, and is going out of favor. It is not definitely known whether The Toff will be started in the Cup, but this week's final payments will .probably settle the question. • Mares have not loomed largely amongst the winners of the Auckland Cup, onlj three —Lottie, Anita, and Warstep—winning in 42 years. This year the only one of the sex engaged is Lady Penury. C. Emerson, who has ridden 31

winners tliis season, is mentioned as the .probable rider of Ardcnvohr in the Auckland Cup. The anticipated Altercation-Altera-tion mix-up occurred at Woodville last tvtck, and now many backers of the winner are wlondcring when they're gcing to get paid. Altercation came .through as an acceptor in the Weltel, ami some backed that noddy, while Cillers who were better informed (by private wire) took the name for Alteration, and backed the Taranalri ,pnul. \"o\v the Bar Vons are doing a shuffle, and everybodj is cursing insano racehorse nomenclature. The name ''Alteration" should never have Leon at all, Tararu Jack's wretched form at Ta kit puna resulted ia his party pulling him out of the Grafton Hurdles at Eiierslie. Desert Gold and Egypt are ' galloping in great' form, and when they clash with Sasanoff and The Toff at Ellerslie, there will be something doing! * Hymencstra, by Hymettus—Straga, winner of the Maiden at Woodville the other day, is one of the Hon. J. D. Ormond's representatives in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. The colt is the only two-year-old that lias won over six furlongs this season, and his prospects in the Northern race appear to be first-class. ''How to make money by backing horl-es!" is a problem 'that has occurred to many, but if Dame Rumor is correct, there is an Inglewood "gucsser" who* beats the band at picking winners. Whether he dreams 'cm, works them out by algebra, or just gets them from a lady friend of tlie washer-lady or the jockster's second-best girl,' "Moturoa" doesn't pretend to know, but he recently picked, five out of six, and his "fee," which at present stands at a modest quidlet (they say), is likely to dash up to -a fiver at any moment.
