MEDICAL INSPECTION.
RECRUITS PANNING OUT WELL. \ (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Tuesday. ; The work of the Medical Boardst established under the Military Service; Act is not yet sufficiently advanced to' indicate in any reliable way what pr,o-" portion of the reservists ot the first' division are going to prove fit for active service. Of the men who were drawn 1 in the first ballot, a substantial proportion have appealed, and, most of the appeals have stil| to be heard by the Military Service Bjpards. The men are not being medically examined in the meantime, since it would be a waste of time to examine reservists who are going to secure a period of exemption They would have to go before the Boards again before entering camp. The reservists who did not appeal from the decision of the ballot are being summoned before the Medical Boards in detachments, as. the medical officers move about the country, aiyl the indications at present are that the proportion of fit men is going to prove larger than was originally anticipated. In Invercargill, for example, the Medical Board examined 93 reservists who haj not appealed. Of this Tiumber, 2!i were rejected as permanently unfit, and 15 were passed as fit for home service, the remaining 4!> being,'passed -.i?. fit for active service. Some of the nu>n included in the 49 were suffering ''rem slight .defects, remediable by treatment or operation, but in th& opinion of the doctors they could ail be made available for service with the Expeditionary Force. The proportion of fit men in this instance may have been unusually high, but reports from other districts supply .similar evidence .
