BAYLY MEMORIAL SPORTS.
WON BY A STRATFORD BOY. The sports in connection with the Bayly Memorial Scholarship were held on Saturday on the New Plymouth High School grounds in beautiful weather. The grounds were in perfect order, and' complete arrangements for the success of the sports had been made by air. W. H. Moyes, Principal of the school, and his staff. It is to be regretted that the number of entries were so small, only two schools—Stratford and New Plymouth High School-—being represented by a total of seven boys. The conditions attaching to the Scholarship are:—Age limit 13, with easy standards, over a few athletic events, combined with tlie marks obtained at a junior national scholarship examination. The competition should have brought the scholarship within range of numerous lads, and an entry of at least thirty lads from the schools within the Taranaki Education District might reasonably have been expected. It is hoped to infuse more interest next year into the scholarship, which was instituted in memory of one of the finest athletes that Taranaki ever produced. On the whole yesterday, the .performances were, disappointing, only three of the lads gaining the total of 80 points necessary to qualify in athletics. The kicking was of a very mediocre order. The following h;ds competed: H. Tristram and A. McGuinness (Stratford); 11. Cachemaile, 0. Moora; A. Candy, S. Smith, and L. .fillet. (New Plymouth High School). Messrs. James McLcod (chairman) and James Garcia, members of the Taranaki ■Rugby Union, were present. The officials were: —Starter, Mr. W. 11. Moyes; timekeeper, Mr. James MeLeod; judges, Messrs.-.1.
