A PUXITIVE EXPEDITION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. 'Sydney, Dec. 9. A punitive expedition consisting of Enalish and French sailors and native police landed at Malekula to punish the murderers of the Bridges family, cabled on August 21. The natives fled. After burning their village the expedition retired, but was attacked on both sides of the track by natives firing at point blank range from the thick jungle. A rur.ning fight ensued to within "half a mile of the main camp, and when it was reached the ammunition was exhausted There wen- seven native police killeo and a British sailor and a policeman wounded.
[Details of the massacre of the Biidses family at Pautu in August show that the family, of whom the eldest child was twelve years of age, was at supper when they were attacked. The bodies of Bridges and four children were battred almost beyond recognition. Th? fifth child was carried into the bush. The indications are that the natives first killed Bridges. His native wife and another child were absent at the time of the tragedy, which is stated to be the result of a long period of weak administration of native matters.]
