New Zealand's consumption of "Newsprint" Paper exceeds 50 tons daily, all which is imported. It is proposed to erect works, comprising a full equipment of modern machinery, capable of producing 20 tons daily. Thirty thousand acres of timber land hav» been reserved by the Government for trio Company. Continuous investigations have been made by the promoters during the past six' years. GUARANTEE OF SUITABILITY OF TIMBER. To prove this important point the promoters had a large quantity of timber cut indiscriminately from their own reserve, which was shipped to Europe under the care and supervision of a special officer, who watched the process of manufacture in one of the best European mills, and returned to New Zealand with rolls of "Newsprint" Paper. The following Report was received from the Manufacturers:—''The results of the tests, which were carried out with all accuracy under working conditions, prove in the most evident manner that NEW ZEALAND TIMBERS CONSTITUTE IN ALL RESPECTS i\ FIRST RATE MATERIAL FOR THE PAPER MAKING INDUSTRY, and the manufacture of both Mechanical and Chemical stuffs, SO THAT 'NEWSPRINT' PAPER AND OTHER KINDS OF PRINTING PAPER CAN BE MADE ENTIRELY OF NEW ZEALAND RAW MATERIALS. A comparison will prove that the sample manufactured in equal if not superior in tensile strength to thi 'aewa' on which: our leading New Zealand dailies are printed." The property is situated 31 miles from Greymouth, and is skirted by the Midland Railway for 12 miles, and contains sufficient timber to last for 00 yeais. With the rapidly diminishing supply of pulp timber and the annual stripping of large tracts of forests for this purpose in all parts of the world, there is no doubt that in a few years the Paper and Wood Pulp Industry in New Zealand will prove one of the most important amongst the Dominion's "secondary industries.
