Mr. Arthur Brett, of the Auckland Star, was in New Plymouth yesterday. A London cable reports the death of Lady Tennyson, at the Isle of Wight, from pneumonia. A cable from Koine states that the Pope has appointed the Rev. Father Brodie as Bishop of Chmtehnrch Mr. T. Harles Giles, Conciliation Commissioner, of Auckland, is visiting New Plymouth.
Mr. T. IT. Rix, of Dunodin, passed through New Plymouth yesterday, on his way to Auckland.
Sergeant IT. T. Bullen, who has been home on a few days' leave, returns to camp this morning. Corporal Frank Moore, who has been spending a few days' leave in town, returned to Trentiiam yesterday morning.
A United Service cablegram says that Mrs. and Miss Masspy were received by the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
A London message reports the death, At Bayreuth, of Dr. Hans Riehter, the well-known conductor of concerts in England. Mr. «, E. McCarthy, 3.M., who -lias been in charge of the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court during Mr. Crooke's absence, leaves this morning for Wellington. Private advices, received yesterday at Gisborne, show that P'rfvaie Frank Katclill'e, of Gisborne, has been recommended for the Victoria Cror.s -for rescuing wounded under lire during the Somme battle, fie left with the" 7th Reinforcements,—Press Association. A cable from London states that ■lames Braid, the well-known professional golfer, was accidentally killed whilst boarding a train at Waterloo station. He won the open ehnmpionship of England in )!)01, 1905, 1000, 100S, and 1910. The death occurred at St. Albans on Saturday evening, at the age of seventy years, of Mr. William Curry, wdio arrived at Lyttelton forty-seven years ag»i in the ship Siberia. He took up land in the Akaroa district, and lie remained on the peninsula until about two years ago, when he retired and went to Christchurch. He leaves a widow, five daughters and five sons.
Mr. William Garrett, senr., of Mount Eden, Auckland, died on Sunday morning He was talking to his son, Bombardier J. T. Garrett, when without any warning of previous indisposition, 1h suddenly expired. Mr. Garret was a native of .County Cavan, Ireland, .having come to New Zealand in the ship Lady Jocelyn, as a member of a party of settlers under Mr. G. Vosey Stewart's Kalikati Settlement scheme. Mr. Garrett leaves a widow, five sons, and five daughters. Three sons arc with the forces.
One of the Crimean veterans—a band that has now almost totally disappeared —passed away suddenly on Monday at Lcith Valley, Dunedin, where he had been living for the past 4fi years. This was Mr. Alexander Carson, who was born in County Down, Ireland, in 182(1, and attained the age of 87 last August, H« was all through the Crimean campaign in the vigor of his early manhood, and wore two medals, and a clasp, indicating that he had had part in the historic struggles at Sebastopol and Alma, He left the army in 18BC, and came to New Zealand in 1870, where he had been engaged in farming and gardening in the Leith Valley ever since. .
