LOCAL TRADE CONDITIONS.
BUSINESS SATISFACTORY. I Tn Ilia monthly report concerning labor, conditions, the officer in charge of th-i Labor Department at New Plymouth, (Mi. W. J. Wakelin) states there has hot;! little change since the last monthly report. The building and allied trades have continued to be very actiso. Good business has been done by the engineering, leather, shirt-making, and tailoring trades. The retail trades generally have been fair, the grocery business being the busiest of these. The Waitara Freezing Works have commenced operations, and at present the beef butchers are being employed about four days 11 week. This is considered to be very satisfactory for the first month of the season. The mutton butchers have not been so busy, but work should improve shortly. There have been few seekers after employment and goad laborers can be placed. Men are wanted in the carpentry, joinery, painting, plastering, plumbing, gasfitting, engineering and leather trades. Business has been brisk at the sash and door factories, and sawmills are busy. Bcnclnnen are urgently needed at the boot factories. The majority of the printing firms have found business rather dull, though one firm has a big supply of work in hand. The cycle and motor trades have been good The dairy factories have been very busy, and are "now in full swing. A shortage of casual laborers in the dairying industry is anticipated. Business has been satisfactory in the oil industry, though the output is insufficient to meet the demands. An improvement has been shown in the aerated water manufacturing business. I■ . ■
