SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the executive of the I Taranaki School Committees' Association was held on Monday evening. Mr. S. G. Smith presided over an attendance of 20 numbers. Representatives of Frankley road, West End, Bell Block-, Mnngo'rei Lower, Hurford, Fitzroy committees, and Moa branch (representing nine schools) were present. Discussion took place on the decision of the Education Board requiring school committees t,j communicate with the secretary of the Board before closing schools in cases of epidemics. Members present expressed the opinion that the Board was going too far in restricting the powers of committees, and that one day it would find itself in the position of'having no committees to work for I them. No resolution was passed in connection with the matter. On the motion of the chairman it was resolved to urge that meetings of Council of Education be open to the Press. Mr. Smith said the deliberations of the Council were of paramount importance, and it was only right that school committees and the public should have an opportunity of reading the debates. It was resolved.to request the Education Board to establish a centre in connection with its scheme for agricultural instruction at New Plymouth. The executive decided, on the motion of the Rev. A. B.' Chappell, to endorse the resolution recently passed by the Education Board with regard to the policy of economy observed by the Department concerning backblocks schools, and tc identify itself with the aims cf the. Board.

On the motion of Mr. Smith, representing Hurford, it was resolved to ask the Eoar.l to t.i:pply uniform account books to school committees. |
