UNITED STATES.

BELGIAN DEPORTATION PROTESTS. Washington, Dec. 3. A great mass meeting is being arranged to protest against the Belgian deportations. Clergymen and university presidents are also sending a memorial to Germany. '

The Administration is preparing further vigorous representations. It. .possesses evidence absolutely refuting the German plea that the deportations are designed to give employment to the idle. It lias been ascertained that many workmen who were, profitably employed have been forced to go to Germany to do military work.

GREEK POSITION EXPLAINED Washington, Dee. 3. A Greek Government Note to the United States, protesting against the Allies' actions, points out that Greece, after extended consideration, decided not to participate in the war because it was impossible to obtain the necessary guarantee that she would not be doomed to inevitable destruction. It was untrue that her sympathy was with either group. Owing to her geographical situation she was forced to submit to the occupation of provinces and the seizure, ofpublie'services, also the abandonment of vessels. For a long time Greece had boen unable to import necessaries,, but tile army and navy and Government had 'unanimously rejected, and continued to reject, Admiral du Fournet's latest demand for war material, which was a serious assault on the sovereign rights of Greece, who felt it her duty to expose the situation to the United States. Greece was confident that she would emerge from the crisis weakened but intact If the United States and other neutrals did not save Greece a grave situation would arise; therefore she asked, the United State, to support her by disapproval of the Allies' action.
