BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MEETING OF WORKS COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Works .Coismittes of the New Plymouth Boroiigh Council was held last night, when there were present:—The Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) and Crs, L. M. Montoath. J. S. S. Medley, .1. Hayden, F. E, Wilson, W. A. Coll is, W. F. Short, F. J. Hill, 15. Smith, ,E. Griffiths, ,and A. E. Watkin.
: Mr. Newton. King applied ,for a permit to effect repairs to the portion of his premises in Devon Street recently destroyed by fire. The Borough Engineer reported on the matter, anil it was resolved that Mr. Newton King be informed that the damage done wrs so extensive that the building should not be repaired in wood or iron. Mr C. Ivyngdon is to be informed that the Council is not prepared at the present time to enter into contracts for the large supplies of metal and gravel set out in his letters, but that the Borough Engineer will confer with him in regard to such metal and gravel as may be required
The caretaker of the waterworks asked that the electric light should be connected over the filters at the reservoir. Acting on the recommendation of the Borough Engineer, it was resolved tq defer the matter pending a further report. Mr. Bullot was granted permission to evt grass on Whiteley Street, Moturoa, for bay, subject to certain conditions. It was resolved to have repairs, recom* mended by the' Borough Engineer, effect* ed to the ironwork in the belfry of th» post office tower, at a cost of £i or £5.
Mr. 1!. May was granted permission to keep fowls in Devon Street West, subject to the Engineer's approval.
Mr. C. S. Curtis wrote in reference to the Council's request that he connect up with the water sfstem, pointing out that he hart installed a well and a concrete tank and had also put in a septic tunic, at ;i cost of £IBO, as at the timt ha erected his residence an application 'By. him to be connected with the borough supply was declined. He therefore asked the Council to reconsider its decision, as it would cost him £3G or £4O to carry the water to his house without •getting any advantage. Or. Smith considered it would he a hardship to enforce the regulation in this case. 1
C'r. W. A. Collis stated that there v/ere one or two other similar cases that had been brought under his notice, but the. Mayor pointed out that these wero not before the Council. After a little discussion, it waR decided to refer the matter to the Engineer for a report, and if everything is satisfactory and Mr. Curtis will pay tha water rate, he be exempted fiom connecting his property with the water main.
