MATINEE TO-DAY. A POWERFUL BRITISH FILM—* : IRIS" There will be two performances at the Empire to-day a matinee at 2 this afternoon and the evening season at S, when the principal attraction is the Hep worth Company's elaborate and artistic adaptation of Pinero's famous drama, "Iris." It is a story of a beautiful and wealthy young widow, Iris,'who is loved by Trenwith, an impecunious young man, and Mandano, a wealthy man of the world. Iris cannot re-marry unless she forfeits her legacy, yet she is in love with Trenwith. The'latter goes away to Canada to make a home to take Iris' to, but during his absence Mandano contrives to get Iris within his power. Iris is. however, devoted to Trenwith, who proves his love by overlooking the frailties of woman, and a happy ending is brought about. The situations are tensely dramatic, yet not overwrought, and there are enchanting lake seen"? which provide a most effective background to some of the episodes. The supporting films are of an entertaining character, comprising "The Gauniont Gra phic," "Mutt and Jeff at the Outpost" (comic sketches), and some bird studies.
