WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) December 1. The Clifton County Council have gone in for something up-to-date in the ihape of a 25 horse-power kerosen-driven IC-ton Austin road-roller and scarifier. This machine was landed in Waitara some days ago, and put togcthei on the wliarf. At the trial spin yesterday the agents (Booth, McDonald & Co.) informed me that she is working right up to expectations. Councillors were much impressed with the exhibition. At the parade of the Senior Cadets, held last Tuesday, Sergeant R. St. George and Corporal B. Baker were each presented by Lieutenant Brabant, on j behalf of Mrs. Frank Clare, with a silver medal, suitably inscribed, in recognition of their bravery in rescuing Mrs. Clare's son from drowning. During the recent heavy flood the lad by some means got into the river, and, had it not been for the timely assistance of these two cadets, the boy would have certainly been drowned. Borthwick's had a somewhat unusual beast to slaughter this week. It was a •2%-year-old steer with only three legs. The" steer was in good condition, and organically sound. The West and East Beach Improvement Societies are holding a combined I meeting next Monday night to go into the ways and means of holding an amalgamated gathering on ,the beach on New Year's Day.
