Mr. W. A. McCutchan has been ra'« elected chairman of the Whangawomoni County Council.

Among those reported in recent casualty lists as killed in action appears the name of Private C, N. Furze (Mrs. M. C. Furze, Tikcrangi; mother). Mr. Joesph Dean, of Woodbury, onf of the oldest residents of South Canterbury, died on Thursday, aged S3 years, He leaves a widow and several children.

Rifleman C, N. f'iordge, whose father, Mr. W. Jj. C.ordgc, resides at Vogeltown, is reported to he seriously ill. Kifleman Ciordge was wounded in France on September 15.

Lieut, (lilray is the well-known Rhodes scholar and the Xew Zealand and Scottish international footballer.

Second-Lieutenant Melville Herborb Kay, of the Durham*, a X-ew Zealand farmer (killed in action), was the younger son of the Rev. Walter 'Herbert Kay. Born at Ilawera, he went with his parents to England at an early age, and was educated at a school for tha "sons of the clergy' 1 at Leatherhcad, in Surrey. Returning to New Zealand, aged 17, he engaged in farming in Banks Peninsula and Hawke's Hay. He offered his services when war broke out, but) was rejected, as he did not reach the height standard, lie proceeded to England and joined the Officers' Training Corps, received his commission, and was appointed to the Durham Light Infantry. He had been about a year France. Lieut. Kay was 2o years old. ,■
