RIOT AT FEATHERSTON CAMP.
OVER CANTEEN CHARGES, • j (I'rom Our Own Correspondent.)' Wellington, Nov. ■!">. A iiot thai threatened at oik; time to serious proportions occurred ;it Keutherston Camp last Wednesday night. The men concerned, it is stated, were chieily members of the ?lst Reinforcements, but the 20th Reinforcements, who were about to leave for Trentham, ivere also implicated to some extent. Dissatisfaction with the canteen charges appears to have been the cause of the trouble. All the windows in the oanteen were broken, and some other damage was done before order was restored. One soldier was arrested, and will be tried by court-martial on a serious clia.vge. The canteen became crowded with men early in the evening, and. sections of the men began to behave riotously. Some officers checked them temporarily, and later an effort was made, by the officers 4 to clear the canteen. A ' little speech by one of the staff officers was of no avail, and there was some fighting about the door of the canteen. .Several officer are stated to have been struck, and one soldier was arrested. Anothei man was detained for n short time, but his comrades attacked violently and rescued him. In the meantime some companies of the 20th Reinforcements had been got together by their officers, and they succeeded in dispersing the rioters. Bricks ivere thrown outside the canteen during the final stages of the struggle, and one company of the 20ths made a charge without arms.
