THE HAWERA SHOW.

A SUCCESSFUL OPENING. SPLENDID EXHIBIT -OP CATTLE ' 4ND PIGS. Under present ntlver.i* conditions it must lie extremely difficult to make an A. and P. Show a success, mainly owing to the intensity of the labor problem. It is therefore distinctly creditable to the president and officials of the Egmont A. and P. Association that their strenuous labors of the past four, months should have resulted so satisfactorily, the aggregate number of entries being 1023, only thirty less than last year. Horses and sheep accounted for the greatest falling-off, while cattle, pigs, and dogs showed a satisfactory increase. The arrangements on the whole were good, the officials doing their utmost to give satisfaction and pleasure to visitors and exhibitors. With the exception of the Ayrshire section Hie judging was commenced early yesterday, and this was \ery necessary, as competition was so keen that it was not till late in the afternoon that the judges had finished their work. There might have been better facilities afforded to the press representatives, but this was probably due to the difficulty of retaining the requisite messengers to supply the reporters with results. There is something in the show to interest everyone. The home industries have filled well. Agricultural machinery of every description occupies a large area of ground, and there is a great variety of makes of motor cars, lorries, and cycles. Hide shows are in strong force and appeared to be doing good first day business, though (lie attendancewas hardly up to that of last year. The weather though threatening early, van beautifully fine, and similar weather today should ensure a record attendance. The horse entries were fully 20 per cent, less than last year. This is the experience of all shows, and must be taken ns a sign of the times. Naturally considerable interest centred in the competition events, but the jumping general); was hardly up to previous years. The entry list saw several Manawatu horses engaged, and the Feilding owner. Mr. E. Short, succeeded in winning the principal event, the hunters' competition, after a close run with the Urenui champion. Mr. O'Neill's Mae. Another Feilding horse, Twilight, was a good third. The number of entries in the thoroughbred, class was small, but the quality was excellent. The draught classes were keenly contested by Messrs Oughton. Hastie, and Perry. The judges had no light task in deciding those events, the condition of the horses showing the great care taken by their owners. The pony section was well up to previous years, and some neat jumping was shown in their competition. TARAXAKI'S WEALTH -PRODUCERS. Dairy cattle were a strong feature, the show grounds.being situated in the centre of a rich dairying district. Practically the pick of the various popular Taranaki breeds were entered, and as these were competing against cattle from as far away as J.ilmcrston and the South Island, it can easily be imagined that they formed an exhibit very hard to beat.

]» Dumber? Jerseys and Ayrshire. l ? were practically equal. FreMans being next. Among grade cattle Jerseys had f preat numerical super'irity. The judge of the Jerseys (Mr. A. K. Booth, Carterton) staled that he had heard a good deal of the quality of the Taranaki Jerseys, but he was surprised at the exhibit, which - war good right through. In the cows all were exceptionally good and in this, as in the clasj for three-year-olds, he had considerable difficulty in making his award. O'Donnell's Gould's Bilberry sth repeated its Palmerston performance by gaining championship honors. A. A. Ward's three-year-old Miro Mentions Bluebell annexed the reserve. Wren Bros, won the championship and reserve with Silverlock's Duke and Molivas General. The young stock also took a lot of the judge's attention. The grades throughout were good, showing that the right type of sire is being used. Additional interest was lent to the Ayrshire? by the fact that the Ayrshire Association's gold medals were offered for competition, and also that several cattle o f the well-known southern breeder (C. J. Parlane) were in the ring. Fred Mills' Champion Lottie of Waipapa retained the premiership, defeating 1 Duchess of Hollybank, now owned by Olson Bros., of Egmont Village, and which had won the Christchurch championship and had never previously been beaten, but was not in such good bloom owing to the journey up. Olson Bros, secured first in yearling, two-year-old. and three-year-old. In bulls J. Kyle's Prince Bonus of Glenariff wrested championship honors from D. Buchanan, the Palmerston owner. Both in male and and female the Ayrshires were the finest seen in a show ring for some time. Holsteins also were a fine show, competition being equal to that at Palmerston. \V. James made a splendid debut into the show-ring on his own account, securing first, championship, and gold medal with Xazle Fayne Segis, and first with Payne Segis Belle 111. in a big class of three-year-olds, W. J. Bradfo-d (Anroa) securing reserve. In the bulls another well-known animal, King Rose do Kol, owned by H. E. Johnson, of Tokaora, secured the championship, E. M. Glenny's Ashlea Knight being second.

There was keen competition in the fat cattle class. T. A. Duncan (Huntervillel, Hugh Middleton (Waverley) and G. Hobbs (Inglcwood) had some prime exhibits, the last named securing two firsts In Shorthorns, the Moore Hunter estate had matters all its own way, as did John Forbes in Herefords. In milking Shorthorns R. Turnbull and Sons showed some animals that the judge said could take their place in any show ring, 1 PIGS. The exhibit of pigs was the best that, has ever been penned in Hawera. both in quality and number. The magnificent speeiments of Berkshire, Yorkshire and Tamworth were the subject of much commendation from the dairy farmers, and surprise was expressed by the uninitiated at their huge size and sleek ai> pearance. The Porirua Mental Hospital and Mrs. J. Wall, of Hastings, were the principal prize winners, several Taranaki breeders alio securing places.

SHEEP, ThescMasses were nil keenly contested, tlu> opinion of ninny being that the general condition and quality of the sheep were excellent. The judges had no light task in making their awards. Mr. W. B. Grant, the well-known New Plymouth exhibitor, was very successful, whilst the Masterton breeder, Mr C. Allen, also had a good prize-winning record. The South Taranaki exhibitors, Messrs R.
