Mr. J. S. Connett was elected chai*man of the Tannnki County Council yesterday. Mr. Justice Chapman left Xew Plymouth for Wellington yesterday morning. Mr. W. IT. Tladdrell, of Western, ha«. received word that his son, Sydney H. liaddrell, has been wounded in Trance. At Stratford, on Tuesday, Mr. V. C. Davits, of Xew Plymouth, was presented by the Taranaki Nurserymen's Association, for which lie has acted us secretary, with a handsome letter-case, felicitous reference being made to his service-. Mrs. Smith remained in Ireland until sh.> was thirty years of age, and during tho most of that time sin' assisted in supporting herself and tin family by weaving Irish linen. In 1M(! she emigrated to Australia, and wa* married in Sydney. For about eight years she resided in Australia, and then came to Xew Zealand and, made Jier heme in Canterbury, where she lived for over (ill years, 51) of which were spent a' Kniapni.' For the past two years she has resided with her son (Mr. W. J. Smith) at Lower Hutt. Mrs. Smith, despite her great age, is wonderfully active, and i* able to walk about practically without assistance, and her fav ulties are unimpaired with the exception that she sull'er.s from a slight deafness. She has a son and daughter living (out of seven children), 21 grandchildren and V. great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was yesterday tho recipient of many presents and congratulatory messages from vanon.- parts of the Dominion, including one from the Mayor of Kaiapoi.
