COUNCIL'S REPORT. ; I WAR WORK CONTINU'ED. Tlii! annual meeting of the Now Plymouth branch of the \ r citoria League will be hold in the Kawaroa Park pavilion to-morrow afternoon. The annual report, prepared by the president (Mrs. A. C. Burgess), on behalf of the Council, will be presented as follows: — "Owing to unforeseen circumstances, we were unable to bol<'. our annual meeting on Trafalgar Cay, as has been done on the two previous occasions. Our last annual meeting was a pronounced success. After the business portion of the evening 'lmd been dealt with, the Rev. A. B. Chappell gave an address on 'Nelson's Code,' in which he was assisted by Mnjor Sandford and the Scouts. From donations and sale of flags, the sum of £3O was realised ,and paid over to the St. John Ambulance Association as a donation to their Umpire Red Cros9 Fund. "During the past year this branch has steadily continued its war work. Our own Sewing Guild lias been generously assisted by other town and country guilds, making it possible to pack and forward many gifts to the front. "Gift cases have been forwarded to the No. 1 Stationary Hospital each month; cases of cool clothing, canned foods., etc., to Egypt; and fullyequipped kit bags for soldiers leaving camp or hospital. In all, soma twentyfive cases were shipped. "Five eases of children's clothing have been forwarded to the London office. These were duly received, and we are advised that they have been distributed between Queen Mary's Needlework Guild. Church of England Waifs' and Strays' Society, Soldiers' Children and Officers' Family Fund. "A donation of £2' d was forwarded to Miss Talbot, in answer to her appeal for aid to Russian prisoners, and a ease of warm clothing also for the same fund.

"Four hundred handkerchiefs lave been forwarded to Sister Luard, in charge of No. 1 Ambulance Train, in France, near the firing line. "Good \fork 'has been done l).v our junior associates, under the able management of Mrs. Firth, and from their effort on Empire Day the sum of .-€2O was realised and forwarded to the London office to furnish a New Plymouth bedroom in the Victoria League Overseas' Club. This branch has donated £2 Is. fid. toward the New Zealand "'ftoria League Motor Ambulance. 'The Girls' Sewing Guild have contributed 100 garments for soldiers' children in F.ngland, also a donation of '£2 toward tiie New Zealand Victoria League Motor Ambulance. "Our work for the No. 1 Stationary Hospital has been continued in which we have been most generously assisted by friends, as shown in the balancesheet attached, and to whom our warmest thanks are due. The sum of 1 £370 has been paid into the hospital bank account in Wellington, to bp remitted as required for extra comforts for our soldiers. "We have to thank our members and friends of Uruti and its surrounding district for their 'Soldier Day' donations each year; £IOO of this amount has been sent for extra comforts for our men in No. 1 Stationary Hospital, and £73, just received, is to be used by the Leaguo for comforts for our men in the trenches. Also, our sub-branch in the Okau and Tongaparutu district who hnv« sent in gifts of hospital requisites, handkerchiefs for Sister Luard, and donations from sale of Anzac badges for the Soldiers' Club. "We have been able to assist our Uruti and Okau friends in their work on behalf of the Belgian children by forwarding them several cases of toys, for sale in bran tubs, contributed by New 'Plymouth children, in response to an appeal from, the League. "Our memberfehip keeps up well, and includes quite a number of country members, thus linking up town and country in the good work of tiie League,

"Owing to the war having interfered with the ordinary work of the League, the Council recommends that the room rented- from Miss Hammerton be given up. "We are indebted to the Kaihvay Department and shipping companies for carrying our goods free; to the Harbor Board for free use of our workrooms; to the Peoples' Picture Co. for patriotic programme and donation on Empire Day; to the Press for so kindly placing their columns at our disposal; and to those members and friends who have given their loyal help and support during the year."
