RUN AWAY FROM WAR.
NEW SOUTH WALES BOXER. Anstralian-N.Z. Cable Association. Received Nov. 20, 9.50 p.m. Sydney, Nov. 20. Lynton Barrington was fined £lO, and William Lawless, a sporting journalist, £25, in connection with letters addressed to Darcy. . A previous cable stated:—Recently, on the eve of attaining military age, the boxer, Les Darcy, disappeared, and has since been missing. On the lfith November, amongst the luggage of a passenger departing by the American steamer, two letters were found, addressed to Dam', one bearing the pencilled signature of a well-known Sydney sportsman. The passenger and his luggage were taken ashore. There is little doubt that Lea Darcy has succeeded in making his exit from Australian shows (says tho Sydney Sportsman of November 8). Last Wednesday week he brought his motor-car to Newcastle, and then drove it to liis mother's place at F.ast Maitland. Two days later he left the car there, and it is known that he was in a barter's shop in East Maitland oil Friday. lie foft his homo with tho expressed intention of taking train to Newcastle, and there boarding the steamer for Sydney, and going thence to jight George Chip in Melbourne on Cup night. That was the last seen or heard of him, and it is surmised that he boarded a steamer which left Newcastle on Friday for Tal Tal, West Coast of America. The steamer which left the port on that day was |he Hattie Luekenbach. Darcy was not a passenger on the vessel, neither did he ship as a member of the crew. Had he done so he would have come under the notice either of the police or the shipping authorities. Inquiries at the shipping office elicited the fact that Darcy's name did not appear on the ship's articles, and it is known that his .•spplioation for a passport was refused. The only conclusion to he arrived at is that Darcy stowed away on the Hattie Luekenbach, and in that case he is now well on his way to America. When his disappearance was first mentioned, it was thought that possibly lie had departed in one of two oil steamers which left the port for America, but having been seen in Maitland several days after those steamers left, that idea was soon dispelled. Whether Darcy cleared out to dodge military service, o'v to pick up sojie of the big purses offered him in America is known only to himself.
