A Paris cable states that Emile Friol, the world's champion sprint cyclist, was killed while carrying despatches. The Rev, L. He has lately been transferred as Inspector of Machinery from Canterbury to the Wanganui district. Mrs,.W. Stanley, Hillsborough, has received word from her son, Corporal E. C. Stanley, whose name appeared again in the casualty list recently, that he was not wounded, but was suffering from the effects of concussion, caused by ail exploding shell. A London correspondent, writing on October (i, says that Major ?<\ H. Lampen had to relinquish the appointment of brigade-major owing to sickness. He was in Walton Hospital for some time, but has now been discharged for duty. Major Frank Humo was doing duty at Sling Camp. Mr. A. H. Burnett, Church of England Missionary in the Uruti and Mokau districts, has succeeded in passing the first uiui second grades of his theological course before ordination. Referring last e\cning to Mr. Barnett's success, the Bishop (Dr. A. W. Averill) expressed keen pleasure, and said the Home Missionary's achievement was particularly praiseworthy owing to the nature of his work militating against continuous study.
