The Takapuna Spring Meeting opans this day week. Local punters are now satisfied that Rewi iPoto is only a moderate, after all. Mar?o Bello, whose New Zealand Cup engagement wasn't worth going on with, ran record time (2.33) in the Metropolitan Handicap! Trainer Percy Cofl'ey, with Toatere, a full-sister to Rewi Poto, and a two-year-old filly 'by Cardinal Beaufort—Cintra, has returned from Sydney, and will .train his team here. Tarero sprung a tendon badly in the Steeplechase he won at Bllerslie t and his owner will need the stakes to keep the little horse in idleness for some time to come. A Westralian cablecrammer announces that on December 1 bookmakers will be abolished in that State. Let me. see, they were "abolished" in New Zealand several years ago, weren't they? Master Lupin is galloping in good style at Wanganu'i, and will probably carry a ton of local mojiey at Feilding. The disappointing Lady Middlcton is again breaking watches on the tracks, but whether her luck with the colors up will change remains to be seen. She has been an expensive failure since going into Messrs. Walsh and Quarterman's hands, and they must have dropped a lot of good money on her. She has never been too well treated by the handieappers, and on recent form will bo busy giving weight to Gayeium at Ashhurst and at Feilding. Wonder if Tararu Jack will be brought down from Auckland to ipiclc up that 200 sovs. attached to the Spring Hirdles at Feilding?
Cathedral Chimes, winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup, is a five-year-old brown horse, by Fair Chimes—•lean Armour, trained by .1. Bryre. His previous best performance, from a i.ime standpoint, was when lie covered two miles nt Addington last winter in -1.31, and won the First August Handicap. Among other races ho was successful in was the last Auckland Trotting Cup. In all, he registered eight firsts prior to capturing the New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington. He came into favor for the event in question by covering a mile and a half in a trial at Addington recently in the fast time of 3.10'. C'. Emerson, with five firsts, was the leading 1 horseman at the Cantcrbuiy meeting. J. O'Shea, B. Deelcy, and A.' Kced each scored three wins, and A. Olliver, D. Mackay, 11. Young and G. Clarke notched \ brace apiece. The "big men" of the Turf naturally got away with the "plums" of the stakes. <1 L. Stead took £297"), F. H. Lowry £2sl<>, G. D. Greenwood £'2o(>.">, Hugo Friodlander Xl-i'OO, A. B. Williams £ll2O, and Sir George Clifford £!!GS. The ''battlers" shared the "small goods!" Taranaki owners figuring in last week's winning lists were:—"Walter Raleigh" £llBO, A. Alexander £325, ■lervis George £'2so, and B, H. Chaney £2O. "Joe" Conquest, H. Robinson aiul H. Goldfinch each rode two winners at the Auckland Spring Meeting. Sasanoff's Melbourne Cup victory was a oeautv, and just about caused the cup of envy to overflow—as far as 'Straiian owners were eoneerned. After the victories of Kilboy, Quinologist, Shepherd King, and other imported noddies, they took it very badly. Encore, by Maniapoto—Applause, put the finishing touch to a disappointing career by breaking a log at Riccarton on Tuesday. After showing gre'at. pace on the tracks at Hawera. he was well sold for 500 guinea's to Mr. A. W. Rutherford, junr., but he proved to bo none too sound, and was not the payin™ investment some people imagined. Sedd-el-Bahr ehangei* hands at the Canterbury meeting, and should win good money for Mr. Hugo Friedlander amongst the class likely to be met with in the South. Marc Antonys name should appear amongst the acceptors for the Ashhurst Cup. He has 5.4. Marziale, a speedy Advance mare, distinguished herself at Carterton the other day by bolting sixteen miles. Naturally she will require a spell to get over the effect* of that "sprint!" ° Next week horse-owners will be called upon to map out their racing campaigns for the holiday meetings. Taranaki is well catered for in this respect, the Taranaki Jockey Club's Christmas Meeting and the Stratford R.C. Annual Meeting offering sufficient inducement to keep our best horses at home. The Taranaki programme is advertised in another column, and the' Sti'&tfird menu will be served up later on,, -
