* RESTRICTION OF LIGHTING. Australian-N.Z. Cable Association. Received Nov. 17, 9.35 p.m. Sydney, Nov. 17. The Sydney Gas and E-lectrie Lighting Restriction Bill passed both Houses. The new Lighting Act was put into operation for a short time to-day, when candles were requisitioned for interior lighting, but a meeting of the newlyappointed Light and Power Board decided to give the city 24 hours' grace. It is now proposed to cut off all power at midnight on Staday, and private lighting, including theatres and private houses, at midnight on Monday. The penalty for contravention is £SOO, J ABOLITION OF UPPER HOUSE. Brisbane, Nov. 17. The Legislative Council carried an amendment against the Government's proposal for the abolition of the Upper House by 19 to 3. NEW TAXATION PROPOSALS. Brisbane, Nov. 17. The Government's new taxation proposals include the imposition of 1/0 in the £ on assessable incomes of foreign banking and insurance companies as from the end of last December. A. DISQUALIFYING MEASURE. Brisbane, Nov. 17. A Bill has been introduced, disqualifying from membership of Parliament persons acting as directors, attorneys or solicitors for monopoly or alien companies.
