THE LATE DR. MARTIN
BOW II" DIED. The i'Tar.awatu Standard publishes fhe following letter frojn a brother of tin late Dr. Martin who is a gunner in the Fourth Artillery Brigade giving details of T> Martin's death. The letter was v.rittcr, 0:1 September 10, and contained the following references: —"Yesterday (Monday) I purposely wired you that Arthur and I were well, having received word the previous evening from one of his ambulance drivers that he was doing great work and was going strong. About 4 o'clock I chanced to meet u friend who asked me if I had heard anything. I answered "No." ''Well," he said, "your brother is wounded." I asked for further particulars, but he could furnish 110 more. I straightway made off to our medical officers near by and Captain Stout informed me of our brother passing away at J1.30 p.m. last night. The way Arilutr met his death was this. He was out tc a regimental aid post belonging to one of our Brigades when a shell burst into them, one piece of the shell piercing his left cheek down through the mouth and out tf the neck; another hit hira 011 the right, arm below the shoulder; another perforated his abdomen in nine places; and another injured his foot. He was brought down to one station and expressed a wish to go to Dr. McGavin's hospital. On the way Arthur said to Stephenson, his orderly, "I have had a bad hit, and it will be touch and L p." He felt his own pulse going down m the err and was conscious all the v.ay, recognising Dr. JteOavin as he came into the operating theatre. I am quite satisfied everything was done with the greatest expediency and the best that professional men could do was done for him."
