The Takapau correspondent of .the Dannevirke News advises that the Land Fiirehase Board has acquired the following properties in the district for soldier settlements:— Mr. J. W. Thompson's 550 acres, Mr. F. C White's ''Te Awa" property, 1100 acres. It is understood that a block of ?000 acres of the Orua Wharo estate has been offered by Mr. Sydney Johnston at a price very considerable below that obtainable in the open market. The perils of the Mawhitiwhiti ford over the Waingongoro, near the Normanby road, Okaiawa, were illustrated late on Saturday afternoon by the experience of a Maori who was .Tossing with a horse and gig. He suddenly found himself in trouble, due no doubt to a hole having been washed out. Cleverly and at great personal risk he got the horse out of the gig, but nevertheless both went floating down the stream. The gig has been recovered, having come to bank on Mr. Brown's land, but the horse has not been seen, and it is believed it was drowned Star.

Ministers and members of the Board of Trade would'have run a serious risk of a dip in the whey tank had they put in an appearance at the local factory on Friday last, when our cheques came to hand, less %d per lb on October and September butter-fat (writes a Eiverlea correspondent to the Hawera Star). Moreover, "during these three years of Mr. Wilson's 'peace' the Mexicans themselves have been butchered by their own bandit:} steadily and without intermission; and Mexican women and children have died by thousands—probably by scores of thousands—of starvation, and of the diseases incident to starvation."
