A vocal duet ty Mr. and Mis<j Ambury was next given, and then one of the surprises of the evening awaited us. Rev. W. Drew was called I upon to speak. For a quarter of. an ! hour he gave us some of the church history, * some fatherly advice about our faults and virtues, and tome wis'; countel to help us now and in the days to come, and then said he had a very pleasant duty to perform —which he looked upon as a privilege—that of ashing Mr. Ambury to accept a barometer as a token of the love, esteem and honor in which the Sunday School held him. After 22 year's' faithful service a3 superintendent of the. Sunday School, he felt unequal owing to bad health to continue in that capacity, and so found it necessaiy to resign. Mr. Ambury very feelingly retunjd thanks for the gift and spoke very' graciously and lovingly of his connection with the School. The hope was «xprcs3ed that whsn renewed health he would again take up the work, he s6 much loved.
Neit came a pianoforte solo by Miss M. Coleman, a song by Mr. Richardson, and then the second surprise of the evening Mr. Hal. Goodacre, who has been connected with the church since its foundation, gave a short epitome of the church. He then referred'to the privilege of bejig asked to make a presentation to the late church secretary. Mr. G. H. Maunder. He said he had known him for many years, always finding him courteous, willing and, better still, a christian in name and deed, and lie asked his acceptance of a gold mounted walking stitk, suitably engraved and inscribed, and two deck chnirs, one for Mrs. Maunde. - , and one for himself, as a token of the love and affection they were held in the hearts of the members of the church. As the event was so unexpected Mr. MaiSnder was loit for words in which to reply, something unusual for him, but it was only for a little while, for he soon found speech which was very humorous and • well to the point. Then Mr. Harris gave a recitation with great depth of feeling; the Misses Gillespie, a pianoforte duct. Tha Rev. A. C. Seivewright who, with Mr. G. H, Maunder,. was a delegate to the Baptist Union Conference held in Dunedin, gave a very interesting account of those meetings, and so well did he enjoy himself that ho is looking forward to the next conference. Another vocal duet by Mr. and Miss Ambury and a humorous recitation by Miss M. Gillespie followed' The next best item was refreshments, without which no social would bo complete, and after doing full justice to these good things a very enjoyable, profitable, and happy evening came to a close.
