Mr. X. Healy, son of Mr. M. 'Healy, N'ew Plymouth, left for Trentham this morning. He enlisted at Gisborne. Mr. A. C. McKeiiar, of the inspector's office staff. Wellington, is at present relieving Mr. N. K. McDiannid, manager of the P'nk of Xe',7 South Wales, who is indisposed. Count de Tarnow Tarnovske has been •appointed Austrian Ambassador to the United States. It is believed the appointment is satisfactory to the American Government.

Mr. H. J. H. Okey, M.P., l"ft yesterday for Wellington, where he will attend the conference in connection with the proposed commandeering of New Zealand's wool by the Imperial Government'.

Mr. Walter Rutherford, one of tlie best known and most highly respected of Palmerston's business l'nen, died at Paekakariki at about 5.45 on Saturday night. His diath removes' <ne of ths best of Palmerston's citizens, a man who had worked hard and honorably to make his home town a better place for his presence. Palmerston people know how well he succeeded. Twelve years ago Mr. Rutherfnrd had a break in his health which necessitated his going on a prolonged trip to the Old Country. The Rev. F. W. Isitt, the well-known Methodist minister, formerly secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, died on Saturday from heart failure, says a Press Association telegram from Dimcditi. The late Mr. Isitt was born at Bedford on October 3 184(1, and *•#« educated at Bedford Grammar School and Richmond College. He engaged in business pursuits in Birmingham, Manchester, and London from IS'IO to ISDS, and arrived in Auckland in 1870. He was in the active ministry of the WesIcynn Church from 1870 till 1879, and after eight years retired on account of ill-health, 1887-1S)0(I. He was a strenuous worker in the No-License cause, and was a vice-president of the New Zealand Alliance. He was appointed general secretary of the Alliance in 1900, but had to retire on account of ill-health.

iCew Zealand footballers (writes, the London correspondent of the Post) will learn with regret of the death in East Africa of Mr. Denys Douglas Dobson, who was one of Mr. Bedell-Sivright's Rugby team vbich toured the Dominion in 190 S. An old Oxonian, Mr. Dobson was one of the finest forwards in New Zealand. After that tpur he entered the Colonial Civil Service, and was officer in charge of the sleeping sickness operations in Nyossaland, after becoming Resident Magistrate of the Chunzi Dowa District. Mr. Dobson was attacked by a rhinoceros, and hi# gim-bearer fled into the bush, leaving him defenceless against the bi'&st. He was caught with terrific force, and practically disembowelled, his jaw and shoulder being also broken. Nevertheless, he walked a mile and a-half to a house for help, and was then carried forty miles in a hammock before he could get proper treatment. Three of Bebell-Sivright's team have now passed away; the (.titers being the leader himself and Mr. B. L. Switnnell, "that great-hearted ro'imer whoso adventures would fill a book, tlu most charming pages of which would be filled .with his loving letters to the lady he worshipped, his mother." Mr. H. H. Vassftli, another member of Bedell-Siv-right's team, is Assistant Magistrate at Liv.'onde, in British Central Africa. He married Mis- Chase Morris, of Wellington.-
