' At this evening's meeting of the Borough Council the various caramit--1 tees will submit their respective reports. 1 Abattoir.—The Abattoir Committee recommended that the application of the Master Butchers' Association for permission to carry new tallow casks and salt on meat waggons which convey meat to and from the abattoir be referred to the abattoir manager to report upon; that Mr. A. S. Hill be permitted to remove from the abattoir reserve the balance of the gravel for which he was granted permission on certain conditions. Electric Light and Tramways Committee.— Thi„ committee recommended that the British Red. Cross Society be supplied with electric current for their rooms in Queen street during the continuance of the war at the rate of Is per annum; that the application of the British Red Cross Society to the Council , to instal electric light to light the grounds of "Oatea" for the Society's function on December 14 he referred to the chairman and. electrical and tramways engineer with power to act; that th.i new time-table submitted by the electrical and tramways engineer for the .six dayo a week service be approved; that the borough engineer he instructed to report upon the cost of effecting necessary alterations to the ocpur valve at the dam of the Mangamahoe. settling basin; that the borough engineer be instructed to confer with the electrical and tramways enginee.- with a view of submitting j a general scheme for increasing the water power at the power-house; that there is no doubt whatever that the ;ontinuous running of the tramways on, Sunday would be a pecuniary benefit to the community. The question, should, however, be leeided purely from the point of view of the public convenience aftd from the moral aspect and the question is obviously one to be settled by the 'full Council; with the view of obtaining a definite decision from the Council upon the question the comnvtteo suggests that a continuous Sunday afternoon service commencing at such hour after 12 noon as the electrical and tramway engineer recommends be instituted; that the Fire, Board, in answer to- its request, bo informed that Ins Council is prepared to undertake the work of installing the Electric Fire Alarm System at a price to be fixed by the electrical and tramways engineer; that the electrical and tramways engineer be instructed to report upon the cost of purchasing £0 slot meters.
