THE SYDNEY STRIKE
MEN AND SHIPS IDLE. GOVERNMENT MAY TAKE ACTION. GRANT DEMANDS DURING WAR. COMPENSATION FOR OWNERS. Aiistralian-N.Z. Cable Association, Sydney, Nov. 9. The coal strike has rendered idle 25,01)0 in the State. So far *3l' steamers have paid oft' their crews at jSydncy, and many others are expected to follow within the next few days. A gang of miners at Heathcote who were endeavouring to induce railway men to join the strike were dispersed by armed police, The Southern miners are holding meetings, demanding the repeal of the war proclamation. ■Mr. IToyle had a conference with Messrs. Hughes and Jensen, and, as the result, important developments of the coal strike are expected before the end fo the week. Sydney, Nov. 9. Coal agents are discussing tho possibility of importing supplies from Japan, but it is understood that no surplus is available, owing to certain restrictions, and the fact that Japanese miners are finding employment in other spheres. The Litligow iron works are idle for want of coal. Received Nov. 9, 0.10 ,p.m. Sydney, Nov. 9. The fron. H. C. Hoylo returns from Melbourne to-morrow, and it is expected he will put into operation the decisions arrived at for the early termination of the coal strike. Unconfirmed reports state that the Government may suggest the resumption of the eight-hour bank-to-bank principle for the duration of the war, and guaranteeing to make up to owners the losses meanwhile. The Navy Department lias decided to supply coastal passenger steamers and the Orient and. Peninsular Orients mails, and other necessary industries. No mention is made of the mail iines outside those trading U England. The island and Eastern services are seriously affected. The ferries have been informed that there will be no supplies available after the present stocks are exhausted. Melbourne, Nov. 9. The Dunlop rubber mill ha? closed, owing to the :oal shortage, and 1500 men are rendered idle. !ft "
