MOKAU. (From Our Own Correspondent). A patriotic plain and fancy dress ball was held at Mokau last Friday. The hall was crowded, and the gay costumes of the ladies and children made a bright scene. Thanks are due to the ■committee for the way they carried out their duties. Mr. Nichols made an efficient M.C. The music, supplied by .Madame. Cliristofesson and MeXiece Mesdames Cliristofesson and MeXiece was all to be desired. Those in fancy dress were: Mrs. J. Old;, Dutch girl (this costume was greatly enhanced by the U4y - s beautiful hair); Mrs. Maine, gip«y; Mrs. Whitehead, magpie; Mrs. Samson, Early Victorian; Mrs. Sole, Stars and Stripes; Hanson, matron; Miss Drader, 17th Century; Miss Black, " Autumn"; Miss Carrington, "Ribbons: Carrington, England and France; Miss Cain, "Queen of Night"; Miss .1. Stewart, "Starlight"; Miss Stewart, fairy; Miss Clark, Belgian peasant; Miss M. Black, sailor girl; Miss Samson, fairy: Miss Clifton; Miss Wolfe, "Friendhi'p"; McNiece, Avery, Cowan, Wolfe, Clifton (2), Bone, Miss McDonald. Centleiiicu in fancy dress: Mr. Sid. Whitehead. Italian prince; Mr. Wells, clown; Mr. Maine, pierrot; Mr. Nichols, "Black and White." Quite a goodly sum was collected to !mwl ovei to the Patriotic Society.
