SUCCESSFUL PAPER PULP, • Australian-N.Z. Cable Association.' Sydney, Nov. 8. The Rev. .Joseph Campbell's experiments in the production of paper pulp from noxious weeds, and vegetable dyes from scrub trees and native plants, have met with pronounced success. Papcc mills and woollen manufacturers have thoroughly tested the. products, and, pending the formation of a powerful syndicate, propose erecting a plant at Kanima, near Cairns, to execute trial orders, which are valued at .C 15.000. It is expected that the first paper pulp will be nvailablc in January. (The Rev. Joseph Campbell was formerly at Thames, where he had a scheme for the extraction of gojd from poor ore. The method did not prove a commercial success.) INQUIRY INTO WASTE. Melbourne, Nov. 8. Owing to allegations of waste in the. construction of the Kalgoorlie-Port Augustus railway a board has been appointed to inquire. The original estimate of the cost was £3,088,000, inclusive of £291,000 for rol'ing-stock Up to July last £3,256,000 had been spent en construction, and it is now climated that the completion of the line and the provision of ro?ling-stoek will involve a total of £6,948,000.
