At a meeting of Borough Councillors and directors of the Electric Light Company last night, the Mayor presiding, the signing over of the plant, etc., from the company to tin borough was formally completed, an important event in the history of the town. The Town Clerk submitted a schedule of adjustments in connection with the stock taken over by the Council, Mr. Masters, chairman of the late company undertook to have certain repairs to fence at the works effected. The total amount to be paid for the plant amounts to £1.1,400 .Is fid, the principal items being valuers award £15.237 lis <"d. adjustment of stock, £l4l l«s 3d. A meeting of the executive n. the Patriotic Committee held last week considered several applications for relief. 11 was resolved to vote £3 to a soldiers' dependent, the War Relief Association to oe requested to allow n further 15s werikly till a (lovernment pension is secured. After reviewing two other applications fo: assistance from soldiers' dependants it was resolved to continue payments. Major Cox, of Hawera. was here last night. He was met at the station by Mr. I. Masters, chairman of the local Recruiting Committee, and Mr. C. Sole. At the Borough Chambers he afterwards addressed a few citizens on military matters. A cold job! Selling cattle at Mr Newton King's yards to-day was no light task. Still sellers and buyers braved the elements and saw the sale through, under the worst possible climatic comb tions.

A hurricane visited this locality lar-t night. In the early hours before daw ft had set in and throughout the day it has been decidedly damp and depressing underfcot.
