The Jockey Club Committee has decided not to issue new licenses or registrations to bookmakers' clerks and others who are of military age and olig ible for service. TURF TOPIC! (By "Moturoa."V Melbourne Cup to-day. Oaks Day at Riccarton to-mr.rrow. The Auckland meetingY concludes on Wednesday. Kilboy has done no good since leaving Tom Qninlivan'a stable. Ardenvhor was a "skinner" for most "books"; in fact, few could -spell the name! . . Glenroy's form at Ellerslie on Saturday was a distinct improvement on his Waverley running. Wonderful bow a horse can improve 'tween meetings! Desert Gold's engagements are on Wednesday and on Saturday, in the Canterbury Cup and Stead Memorial Cup. Rewi Poto easily outcd a. pwcl of "roughs" on Saturday, and if the race had been run here he Wouldn't have paid thirty bob. Shepherd King gave the Caulficld Cup field, a big start and a bigger hiding, and the imported noddy will be very warm in the Melbourne Cup to-day. The New Zealand Cup winner. Aidenvhor, is a full-brother to Sunbird (Martian—Mary of Argyle), who carried the local sportsman's (Mr. A. Alexander's) colours a season or two hack.
The time registered in Ardonvhor's Cup was only of ft second outside Bridge's record of 3.25; and good and experienced watch-holders reckon Watts's horse didn't break "27." Simonides is an erratic customer, but there is no doubt about his pace "Tod" Hewitt was booked to ride him in the Welcome Stakes, and he must have taken the shortest way home to have reached the .judge's box. in 4Ssec, The toll of the swift! Auckland's crack two-year-old, Gwent, after mopping up the Welcome' Stakes at Ellerslie, broke a leg and wfts ' destroyed. 'Moidant, without the win, did ditto at Riccarton, and Splendant slipped a shoulder and glided out of the Spring Plate. Bimeter's victory in the Stooards' Handicap was Well received by those who kept a keen recollection of the black horse's close second at Trentham recently. Apparently it was an ca3y victory.
In "A'murka" the other day a nag named Boots was credited with' running ten furlongs in 2.2. Needless to'add, he showed a clean pair of heels to the opposition. '
AVhcn Shepherd King scored in the Caulfield Cup the "wool-brokers" were badly shorn. A soldier friend writes from Perth.:— "Our troopship dropped us at Fremantle, and we spent an enjoyable evening at the races. Didn't strik<: a winner, but 'caught' every time on the 'place tote.' Had five bob on our old friend, Ireland, who ran third, and T pulled off £2 10s." Westralia. must be a good place for punters! Just when eraek jockster R. Lewis must have almost despaired of riding a winner of the Caulfield' Cup, the imported hprse Shepherd King carried hJm home in front last month. It was Roberto's seventeenth ride in the race, and he has been viewing the finish from "down the straight" practically without a break since 1805.
Familiarity breeds contempt—or something adjacent. Messrs. Stead . Bros.' colors are so well known in New Zealand that it is hardly likely that either of these gentlemen bother to specify same in their entry forms here, out at Caulficld the other' day 'W.G." was fined £2 for sneh an oversight. Beastly hard lines for Wilfred, dontcherknow! It was as good as a picture show to watch the Bar Vons when Rewi Poto's dividend came through on Saturday night. It was a case. of "four reels," and then a header for home."
Significant advertisement from last week's Sydney Referee: —"Owing to the difficulty' in securing capable riders to work horses at Warwick Fi'.rm, it is announced that the following horses in training will be offered at auctiou, etc. Here follow the names of ten horses.
According to the sporting reporter of the Dominion, it was a- well-conditioned field that paraded in the birdcage lor the New Zealand Cup, but Toki was obviously lame, and Multiply was Walking a bit short in front. Kingforln stripped
the fittest of the field, while Ardcnvohr and Mullingar also looked well, as did Merry Roe. Tha local horse, Snub, was favourite, with Marc Antony second choice. Merry Roe was sour at the barrier, and refused to join tin? Ibid. . Mr. Wood got them off'well, with the exception, of Toki, who lost several lengths. Passing the stand the F.mc time. Ladify and Rose Pink led Snub ar.it Ringform, witli the others b;mched. Rounding.Cutts's, Ladify went out by herself and With six furlongs gone hs'e was six lengths clear of the field. Down the hack Ringform got a bad run, and Rose Pink fell back. Snub, Indigo, and Settler were prominent rounding the I bottom, but entering the straignt the little-fancied Ardenvohr rushed to the front. Indigo tried to go with him, but was soon done with. -A furlov.g from home the race was over,'and it was a question of second place for Sp'ib, Mullingar, or John Barleycorn. The trio fought out a great finish, and Snub got second place by a head_. Mullingar was,. the same distance in front of John Bar-'" leycorn. Then came Multiply, R<.rke's Drift, and Fiery Cross in a line, Sedd-el-Bahr being next. Marc Antony and Ringform were together, and thin came Merry Roe, Indigo, Settler, Rose Pink, Ladify, and Toki. The winner got a mixed reception, but the appli'.use drowned the hooting. 11. Young re je the winner a well-judged race. Ringform '. got a very bad run, and will do better! ere the meeting closes, while the race. 1 will improve John Barleycorn.
