" TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Canterbury Jockey Club's metropolitan meeting will be continued at Riccarton to-day, when the New Zealand Derby Stakes (H miles), and Metropolitan Handicap (li miles) will be the principal events. This year's field for the Derby will hardly be 'up to that of last season when Desert Gold led Nones and Snub home in 2.341-5. Today's field will probably include Egvpt (AJI Black Aurarius), and Wardancer (Martian—Stepdariosr), both of which are very fit at present. In addition to gallops at Riccarton today, and on Wednesday and Saturday, there will be trotting at Addington on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. If a m<m doen's have to "walk home" after that racing carnival, or orgy, or whatever you like to call it, he is a marvel. It is reported that L. H. Hewitt, in addition to being on Snub in his engagements, will ride Simonides, The Toff and Sweet Tipperary at Riccarton this week. An erstwhile Taranaki sport writes from "somewhere in France": "Still galloping strong, but it is a lqng course. For (erased by censor) sake send us a few Taranaki papers. Wishing you a happy New Zealand Cup, and with kind regards to all brother sports, etc." Only those who have experienced the "stranger in a strange land" feeling can realise what it ineanß to get a paper from home. Taranaki sports might take the hint. It means nothing to us. but a heap to those on the "other side."

"Tommy the Mug" (Inglewood) writes: A big crowd of the sports "blew in" from Trentham on Saturday night, and appear to have been putting in solid toil at headquarters. Now that they have got the "dope" out of their systems and have lost their "pukus" they look in rare racing trim. They say that, "Little Eric" broke "48" when sprinting (to the train) at Palmerston, while Ernie Olsen (who has enough hair on his upper lip to stuff a sofa) is just jumping out of his skin to measure strides with the Kaiser. When these bhoys "line up" in France you won't be able to see the Hun for dust!" To which "Moturoa" adds: Good luck to them all. May they continue as they have shaped in their training gallops, and when (with the colors up) they the barrier" for the great "go," may they run the good race, and suffer no disgrace, and be triers every one.
