Yesterday, the opening . day, was merely a preliminary, only the home industries, school classes, pigs, and . a few of the horse classes bcintr judged. To-day the serious business of the show started, and promptly at 0 a.m. the stewards of the respective cattle sections had the animals in the ring.", ready for judging, which proceeded briskly. In many cases the adjudications occupied considerable time, so large were the entries and so good the quality that very careful discrimination was necessary. By the luncheon adjournment the judges had appraised the merits of the majority of the females. ■•~\ SHORTHORNS,' In Shorthorn cows, Douglas McLean secured two firsts and a second; W. If. Booth, of Carterton, a first and two thirds; and William Taylor, of Te ] Awamutu, a second. In the two classes of bulls judged, G. A. Turner, of Eltham, secured a first with Royal Duk-> o2nd, a third and a v.h.e. for two-yeir-olds out o! a class of ten, and in yearlings a second with Duke of Eltham 07th, and a '. v.h.e. out of a class of twenty from all over the island. W. T. Jacobs, of Kiwitea, supplied the winner in To Harama Roxe King. AYRSHIRE?. In the Ayrshire classes, D. Buchanan, of Taikitahuna, secured first and second in the Slack Challenge Cup for bull and three females in milk, also first and second for two cows in milk, first and champion for cow with calf at foot, first and reserve for dry cow, first foi three-year-old heifer, and second and third for two-year-old heifers. Th? Porirna Mental Hospital was first in this latter class, and se/iond and third in other classes. J .Kyle and C. B. Morgan (WocMjviHel were a 'so placed. 1 i -JERSEYS. ■'... R. J. Linn, of Normanby, who was judge of the Jerseys, had a difficult task in adjudicating. Only four classes were completed by lunch. For Jersey cows holding authenticated records, E. Eagle, junr. (Belvedere), was first with Belvedere's Maiden's Blush, also thhd and v.h.e, R. D. Harkncss being second. For cows in milk, A. and J. O'Dcnnell (Inaha) scored with Gould's Bilberry sth in a class of eleven, S. R. Lancaster being second, and E. B. Eagle third and v.h.c. In dry cows or heifers the result was: H. J. Lancaster 1, F. J. Watson 2, S. R. Lancaster 3; while for heifer, three years old, E. Eagle secured first, R. D. Harkncss (Te Horo) second, and P. J. Watson third. HOLSTEIN-FRIESIANS Only four classes, comprising thirtythree animals, were completed, honors being fairly well distributed. Results:— Cow in milk, J. DAIRY CATTLg. | In dairy cattle, the competition was ! practically confined to S. R. and H. I. ' Lancaster, save in the classes for under \ IS months, in which. B. B. Zureher, of ' Longburn, and late of Kaimata, competed, securing a. first for one heifer, and sueond for pen of two. S. R. Lancaster obtained four firsts and three seconds, , and 11. J. Lancaster one first and second. ') PAT OATTLB. In fat cattle, E. Short won in every s section that he contested, securing four r firsts and a second. H. K. MeKenzie, of - .Masterton, was first and second for i Shorthorn bullock under four vcar*. l ; ' I jy COMPETITIONS. Taranaki started well in the ring com- '' petitions. In the first event on Wed--2 nesday, the the Open Riders' Competi--3 tion, ride, walk, trot, and canter, with 3 one jump over 3ft. Cin. hurdles. Budge Gordon, of Tlawera, was first, beating 11. Hnssell, of Hastings, and five others. The next event, a, turning competition, was won by J. O'Donnell, of Inaha. .1. W. Burke (Eltham) scored second in the harness horse competition with Fritz, who was defeated in a strong class by Sydney F. Pcrrett's (Awapuni) Ruby. Thin same mare won the ladies' turnout event. The leaping competition for ponies under 13.2 hands was won by Willie Bakers' (Aokautere) Little Wonder, and under 14.2 hands by J. McDonald's (Marton) Truce,. The maiden hunters' competition was won by Osprey, owned-by S. Syme (Waverley) in a fieid of 14. Willie Baker won two prizes for best boy rider. Miss Leslie Irvine and Miss Miriam Lancaster won the girls' ridins. HORSES. In single harness horses, 15 hands and over, out of a strong class, J. W. Burke's (Eltham) Fritz was adjudged 'irst, J. A. Symonds' (Wellington) Leonora was second. In the 24 hands and under 15 hands class, S. F. Perrett (Awapuni) secured the first prize, and C. F. Pnrton (iPalmerston North) second. In the championship, open to these classes, Perrett's mare beat the Eltham horse. There, were no thoroughbred stallions shown, but there were some magnificent draught sires paraded. The championship was won by the Donald Estate's (Feathcrston) Buchlyvie's Favorite, the same estate's eolt Buchlyvies being reserve. Donald's Estate won outright the Coombes Cup, valued at 20 guineas, ■ RIGS. The portion of the sheep pavilion devoted to pigs was thronged with admiring visitors, the exhibits being typical of the Berkshire, Yorkshire. Tarnworth, and Devon breeds, gathrccd together from all parts of the North TsUuul. In Berkshire boars, Porirua Mental Hospital secured first and champion, o. first, second, and third; Mrs. J. Walls (Hastings), first and second; and R. Chillcott (Frankton) and E, J. Rogers (Ngaruawahia) were also placed. In sows, Mrs. J. Walls secured two firsts, champion, and reserve; E. J. Rosrcrs and J. H. Long (Bunnythorpe) firsts, and were placed in other sections, as also
was the Mental Hospital. In Tnmworths. the championships were awarded to H. P. Neilsen (Tuikatikune), hoar, and. E, J. Rogers (sow). With 11. E. Kymau (Pohangina) they divided the other'prizes. In Yorkshires, the Porirua Mental Hospital obtained five firsts, twu championships, and two reserves against good competition. In large blacks, E. J. Rogers, of Ngarunwa'hia, was the only exhibitor, and he secured live first prizes. PHOTOGRAPHY. Competition in the amateur photographic section was keen, competitors hailing from as far apart as Dunedin and New Plymouth. .In a class of nine, J. C. Wyborn (New Plymoutli) was third for seascape or marine, and C. J. Ducker (New Plymouth) occupied a similar position ''in any study for junior under IS." CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS. Blair's (Hawera) Captain Starlight was first in the hacks 13 to 14 stone, also first in the class most suitnble for hunters, third for the best paced and mannered, and second as a troop horse.
